Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. is seeking a Corporate Development Instructor at our Mechanicsville, Virginia location.  This position is responsible for organizing, conducting and evaluating learning and development courses and projects, specifically in the soft skills/leadership and sales areas for all levels of staff.  This will include the coordination, implementation and delivery of all professional development programs, such as our Carter Career Track program, Caterpillar learning programs, and third-party vendor and individualized training path programs.  In this position, you’ll work with the Director of Corporate Development in conjunction with the Executive Management to determine training initiatives to meet business and succession planning needs.  Seeking candidate with the ability to provide inspirational leadership, effective management and serve as a role model for the company.  Must have proven experience with employee development and leadership.  College degree in a related field preferred.


  • Self-starter able to work with limited supervision.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; able to speak effectively before groups of customers and employees.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize workload; able to develop course outlines and plan classroom exercises.
  • Help coordinate the logistical and technical aspects of professional development programs; help develop a budget and cost analysis for all training plans.
  • Implement a process for collecting, documenting and reporting professional development outcomes that focus on the instructor, program and learner.
  • Able to delineate goals, areas of improvement, expected time frames and evaluation methods.
  • Maintain a general knowledge of the various products and markets Carter Machinery serves.
  • Take an active role in the delivery of our company’s mission, vision, goals and values, providing inspirational leadership, direction, optimism and purpose.
  • Strong PC skills and the ability to self-develop and adapt to changing technology.
  • Able to travel and work hours required by the job and customer demand.

Must meet physical requirements for the job, including the ability sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.  Able to lift, carry and maneuver items up to 20 pounds in weight.
